Compiègne Castle

Château de Compiègne was built between 1751 and 1788 by Louis XV and Louis XVI. It was then remodelled under Napoleon I and Napoleon III. We take you on a tour of France's largest neo-classical château.

A royal and imperial residence in the Oise region

Visit Compiègne castle

Inside, four flats are open to visitors, including that of the Emperor and Empress. The rooms have been furnished according to one of the three periods in which the château was occupied: the eighteenth century, the First Empire and the Second Empire.

You can also discover the Louis-Philippe theatre, inaugurated in 1832. It is unusual in that it has preserved its original wooden machinery (conference visit at extra cost). Practical info: The château is open every day except Tuesday from 10am to 6pm.

The grounds of Château de Compiègne

Created under the First Empire, this magnificent 700-hectare park is criss-crossed by a majestic 5km avenue and dotted with sculptures.
Near the glasshouses, the Rose Garden has been restored to its 1821 state.
Here you can admire ancient rose species such as the Damask rose and the Gallica, alongside irises, peonies and Oriental poppies. A colourful and fragrant spectacle.

Museums to discover

In addition to the Château de Compiègne and the park, you can visit three museums located on the estate. They are included in the price of the ticket.
  • The Second Empire Museum: this evokes the daily life of the court under Emperor Napoleon III, recreating the refined atmosphere of the period.
  • The Musée de l'Impératrice: a more intimate museum displaying objects and souvenirs of Empress Eugénie and the imperial family.
  • The National Car Museum: a rich collection of vehicles dating from the 17th to the early 20th century: carriages, automobiles, bicycles, etc.
